According to the Disability Rights Commission (DRC), 8.6 million people in the UK are disabled. However a report from the DRC has shown that four out of five British websites did not meet the minimum requirements for accessibility by disabled people. Guidance from the British Standard Institution has now placed responsibility for website Accessibility on both the website owner and the website developer.
The legal side of the requirement has an important added benefit. On the organic rankings on search engines, which are crucial to many companies, websites that meet the Accessibility guidelines nearly always out-perform websites that don't.
